A recent clinical study in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology found that diverticulitis only occurs in about 4% of people. Small pouches, or diverticula, may form in the weak areas of the large intestinal walls (the colon). For most people, the pouches do not become an issue and it is known as diverticulosis. For 5-25% of people who form diverticula, it is thought that leakage or microperforation develops, which can lead to infections, inflammation, or bleeding. This is known as diverticulitis.
