Manoj K. Mehta, MD

Dr. Manoj Mehta has been a lifelong Chicagoan. He grew up in the south suburbs and completed his medical school, medical residency, and gastroenterology fellowship at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago. While most students coveted the “private practice” residencies, Dr. Mehta elected to do rotations at Cook County Hospital to expand his exposure to various types of pathology.

As a University of Chicago faculty member, Dr. Mehta is active in the training and education of residents and fellows. This includes our local NorthShore housestaff, as well as rotating University of Chicago trainees. NorthShore now has its own gastroenterology fellowship program, and Dr. Mehta has been extensively involved in the endoscopic training of the fellows. Teaching has been a way of giving back. “When I was a student, the great mentors really shaped my experience. Mentorship might be the single biggest reason I chose gastroenterology, actually. I had great teachers, and that made the field exciting for me. I like to bring that excitement back to the younger physicians I supervise.”

Dr. Mehta’s interests include IBD, the bacterial microbiome, IBS, obscure gastrointestinal bleeding, eosinophilic esophagitis, and management of complicated reflux disease. He has advanced training in small bowel capsule endoscopy. Dr. Mehta has traveled to Cambodia and Vietnam and had the opportunity to visit rural, underserved, medical clinics.

Board certified in gastroenterology, Dr. Mehta is also a member of several gastrointestinal professional societies. He is a Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Gastroenterological Association, and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. He is a member of the Practice Management Committee of the American College of Gastroenterology. He has lectured on a variety of subspecialty gastroenterology topics for various audiences. He has been invited to give Grand Rounds to Evanston Hospital, where he received high accolades for his presentation on the “Microbiome in Health and Disease”. He has spoken at Becker’s ASC conferences on his expertise in management of endoscopic facilities. Dr. Mehta co-chaired the annual Practice Management Summit for the ACG in 2022 and 2023.

Dr. Mehta is a firm believer in patient education and patient participation in health care decisions. He will typically lay out his thinking on a specific case, the available options, and help the patient to arrive at a treatment decision using a team approach.

Dr. Mehta performs endoscopic procedures at Evanston Hospital as well as at the office.  Routine procedures are commonly done in the office, where there is greater efficiency and costs are minimized. Your out of pocket expenses, time spent, and cooperation from your insurance are almost always better. Complex or therapeutic cases are done at the hospital setting.
