Hospital Colonoscopy Facility Fees 55% Higher Than Surgical Centers
Researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health found that U.S. hospitals charge facility fees for colonoscopy procedures that are on average approximately 55 percent higher than fees billed by smaller clinics known as ambulatory surgical centers (ASC’s). Blue Cross Blue Shield data suggests the cost of a diagnostic colonoscopy increased 6.1% at ASC’s from 2018 to 2022, compared to 11.8% at hospitals, so the gap may widen even more over time.
